Environment
Situated in the lower highlands of Central Kenya, the area we located in has a lot of rivers. Unfortuately due to lack of sanitation and industrial waste, many of them are a hazard rather than a blessing. Rotary Clubs in Nairobi have proposed an Adopt-A-River plan with an objective of all Rotary clubs in Nairobi engaging in cleaning up the rivers in their neighbourhood. This project has come to the attention of UNEP, and they have decided to partner with Rotary Clubs in the District by providing funding and modalities of implementation and measuring of impact for this project. We are part of this initiative.
Education and Basic literacy
In the last 2 years, we have had a book call to wellwishers to donate books for schools. We have been able distribute books to 10 schools in our communities, but want to expand this distribution into all our project areas. In 2022, we intend to carry out a project we are calling Adopt-A-Bag. Our plan is to raise funds to provide school children from needy families with a school bag that contains basic stationery like a set of pens, pencils, a ruler, erasers, geometry sets and coloured pencils. We plan to provide 200 of these bags for needy schoolchildren in our community.
Health and Disease Prevention
In 2020, we carried out a Medical Camp in Ol Kalou. This is an area that is some distance outside our immediate environment but the proect was initiated by one of our members whose parents live there. It is in the highlands just north of Nakuru in the Rift Valley. The area has rich soil for growing food for Nairobi and its environs in general. It is also near enough for the markets to be supplied on a daily basis. With all this rich harvest, you would think that the farmers in the area would have no problems.
Peace and Conflict Resolution
Rotary Club of Gachie has continued to support this noble cause and made a decision to go a step further and partner with the Prison authorities in creating an advance experience to prisoners due for release. Towards this end, we have provided extra treats for the prisoners during Valentine’s Day, and contributed to special meals during the celebration of national public holidays.
Water and Sanitation
Rotary Club of Gachie is very proud to be associated with the Kisii WaSH Project in partnership with Rotary Club Lacey, Washington and other Rotary Clubs in Germany and France. This over $200,000 funded project will bring water and sanitation improvements in 37 schools and 70 Health Care
Community Engagement
In an effort to get closer to the leaders and opinion makers in our community, we organized paints and brushes and members painted the outside of one of our local police stations. After painting, since it looked so good, the police have now established a neat hedge border of flowers and decorative shrubs. In the coming months, funds allowing, we will paint 4 other police stations in the area.
Family of Rotary
Even as we take care of others, we continue to foster close and happy relationships with each other as the family of RC Gachie. We have and plan to continue picnics (weather permitting) zumba classes in Karura Forest which is very close to where we are, bowling competitions at Village Market and other social events where we eat and drink together. Other activities we organize and participate in are Quiz nights and inviting speakers to our club, who are experts in matters that club members are interested in and want to learn more about. Most popular topics have been creating wealth, Covid 19, Bit-Coin phenomenon and all sorts of legal matters.
